Community Heroes by Photoville featuring Wilma Maynard

"Nothing's going to happen unless the community organizes. Nothing gets changed unless people speak up." -- Ms. Wilma Maynard

I had the privilege of meeting and photographing Ms. Wilma Maynard for the Community Heroes Project by Photoville. The exhibit will be up from August 2021 to July 2022 — tons of time to check it out and learn about the heroes, the photographers and the youth writers.

She is a lifelong Bed Stuy resident with 60 years of active community service. She's on the Bedford-Stuyvesant Family Health Center Board of Directors and does work with the Her-King Alagantic Block Association, Emanuel Christian Mission Church and the Friends of St. Andrews Playground.

"You can't be a leader and think that you know everything." You have to be a follower to some degree to be a leader."

During the exhibit installation, I ran into Ms. Wilma Maynard -- the timing!

Ms. Wilma Maynard admits she looks pretty good up there!

A little bit sugar, a little bit spice. "I enjoyed my youth. And I enjoyed my adulthood." Now she describes herself as a "senior who's paid her dues".
